Greeting from the Head of School
Welcome to The Town School website. Our school motto, Gaudeant Discentes, means “let there be joy in learning,” and this, in essence, is the defining orientation of our school. While we know that learning – if properly done – is not always easy, it should always be joyful. Why? The most powerful learning transforms a person. When a student finally understands a difficult math problem, feels the power of a poem, or first grasps the vastness of our universe, a life is enlarged and the transformative power of learning is realized. This is an inherently joyful process, and it is what The Town School fosters.
The Town School has always – from its founding in 1913 – been a school of balance. We are both innovative and traditional and utilize the best of both approaches. We value all the contributions our students make – in the classroom, on the athletic fields, or on the stage – and recognize the importance of shaping a student’s character. Accordingly, our students leave Town as superb students and, more importantly, as wonderful people.
Our facility – across from John Jay Park and bordering the East River – is spacious and beautiful, and provides our students and teachers with the resources necessary for excellent teaching and learning.
I invite you to browse our website and to come visit us. When you walk through our school you will feel a palpable energy – the hum that comes from teachers and students engaged in meaningful work together. Our dedicated and creative faculty and the strong partnership between our parents and the school ensure that our students are both challenged and supported to take their talents as far as they can. We look forward to spending more time with you.
Sincerely,
Christopher Marblo
